JGBs surge on Treasury gains due to subprime woes

(Reuters) - Such concerns battered U.S. stocks late last week, when
Standard & Poor's 500 index and the Nasdaq Composite Index
on Friday posted their worst one-day percentage drops
since a global sell-off in equities in late February.

"JGBs are at the mercy of external factors," said Tetsuya
Miura, bond strategist at Shinko Securities.

JGBs fall from 2-month high on stocks, BOJ jitters

(Reuters) - JGBs extended losses as investors took profits after
concluding that bond yields have fallen too far if the BOJ
decides to lift the overnight call rate to a 12-year high of
0.75 percent in August from the current 0.50 percent.

A global slide in equity and corporate bond markets in the
past week has stirred doubts about a BOJ interest rate rise next
month, and driven benchmark JGB yields to two-month lows.

JGBs rise, tracking gains in Treasuries

(Reuters) - "The impact of the earthquake is very limited, partly because
it is a difficult issue to trade on," said a senior JGB trader at
a Japanese bank.

"Once market players are done buying JGBs in the morning they
may sit on sidelines, given a lack of major domestic factors to
trade on today."

JGBs fall on weak Treasuries, Nikkei surge

(Reuters) - Super-long maturities were weighed down by concerns about
auctions later in the month, while investors wary of the sharp
rebound in stocks unwound their holdings of medium-term JGBs.

Comments by Bank of Japan Governor Toshihiko Fukui the
previous day that were seen as signalling a rate hike as early as
August also kept buyers on the sidelines, traders said.

(Reuters) - The amount jumped from 1.18 trillion yen at the previous sale
of similar bonds three months ago and was the third highest since
the ministry first offered JGBs to retail investors in 2003.

During the spring sale of retail-oriented JGBs in 2005, the

JGBs rises after few data surprises, eye on tankan

(Reuters) - JGBs edged higher after core Tokyo prices, which exclude
fresh food prices, unexpectedly fell 0.1 percent in June from a
year ago, while nationwide CPI slipped 0.1 percent in May, in
line with forecasts.

"The fall in Tokyo consumer price data was surprisingly soft,
and that may be supporting JGBs," said Katsutoshi Inadome,
strategist at Mitsubishi UFJ Securities. "But players are also
cautious ahead of the tankan survey."

JGBs extend losses after weak 20-yr auction demand

(Reuters) - Bonds extended losses after an 800 billion yen offer of
20-year JGBs by the Ministry of Finance met with slightly weak
demand as investors remained wary that interest rates will
continue to rise.

"The results were neither good or bad, but the tail was bit
wide," said Akihiko Inoue, market analyst at Mizuho Investors
Securities.

JGB futures climb on Fukui, Treasury gains boost

(Reuters) - A rally in U.S. Treasuries on Friday also encouraged market
players to cover short positions in JGBs, which had been sold off
in the previous four weeks on a spike in global bond yields, as
well as on worries of a BOJ rate hike as early as July.

Fukui said the central bank wanted to be more convinced of
the sustainability of capital spending and consumption before
changing monetary policy, relieving some who had been worried
about an interest rate hike next month.

JGBs fall on stock rebound, BOJ rate hike concern

(Reuters) - Short-term bonds remained under pressure as investors have
grown wary about an interest rate hike by the Bank of Japan in
the coming months, sending two-year yields to a 10-year high.

"Stock market gains and cheaper U.S. bonds were attracting
investors away from JGBs," said Tetsuya Miura, a bond strategist
at Shinko Securities.

JGBs edge up,rate worry weighs on short-term bonds

(Reuters) - Industrial production fell 0.1 percent in April from a month
earlier, against a forecast 0.5 percent rise, but traders said
the data failed to reverse mounting expectations for the BOJ to
raise rates as soon August.

"The weak April data alone does not alter the view that the
economy is growing in line with the Bank of Japan's basic
scenario," said Makoto Yamashita, chief JGB strategist at Lehman
Brothers.

JGBs slide due to fall in Treasuries, Nikkei rise

(Reuters) - Comments by Bank of Japan board member Atsushi Mizuno
reported by Jiji news agency on Tuesday were one factor behind
the weakness in JGBs, said Naomi Hasegawa, a senior fixed income
strategist for Mitsubishi UFJ Securities.

"Mizuno's comments have weighed on short-term bonds, and
Treasury yields rose to 4.8 percent, so sentiment isn't very
good," Hasegawa said.

JGBs recover as selling in Treasuries pauses

(Reuters) - The Finance Ministry will offer around 1.0 trillion yen in 15-year floating rate JGBs this session, and traders
expect the auction to go smoothly as current prices of the
floating-rate bonds were seen as a bargain.

The MOF will also offer 800 billion yen in 20-year bonds on
Thursday.
