S.Africa stocks up on miners, rand firms on gold

(Reuters) - South Africa's bourse rose one percent on Wednesday as resource shares led by BHP Billiton shone on the back of stronger metal prices as the rand firmed on the back of a firmer price for bullion.

Stocks market heavyweight BHP rose 1.40 percent, and rival Anglo American Plc added 1.06 percent to 415.10 rand, as gold, platinum and copper prices jumped in London.
Impala Platinum and Anglo American rose 2.17 and 3.06 percent to 242.40 and 1,041 rand."Precious and base metals such as gold, platinum and copper are having a good day on the London Metal Exchange," Greg Potter, a trader at Nedcor securities said

Anglo says S.Africa zinc, copper unit hit by long strike

(Reuters) - The world's third biggest mining group, Anglo American Plc, said on Thursday that output at its Black Mountain zinc and copper production unit in South Africa had been hit by prolonged industrial action.

Anglo did not say exactly how much output had been lost at Black Mountain which also produces lead and silver.

Anglo, BHP, Standard Bank pull S.Africa bourse down

(Reuters) - Anglo American led volatile South African shares lower on Wednesday as base metal prices slipped, and the market was further weakened by local interest rate hike concerns and a decline on Wall Street.

The Johannesburg Top-40 index of blue-chip stocks fell 1.77 percent at 26,331.06 points. The broader All-share index dropped 1.64 percent to 29,105.27 points.

Ex-Anglo American exec to sit on RUSAL board - paper

(Reuters) - Russia's United Company RUSAL plans to offer a seat on its board of directors to Simon Thompson, former managing director of mining group Anglo American, Vedomosti daily reported on Monday.

Vedomosti, quoting sources close to RUSAL, said Thompson may also become chairman of the firm's 12-member board replacing oil-to-metals tycoon Viktor Vekselberg.

U.K., Irish Shares Decline, Paced by Anglo American, Experian, Tate & Lyle

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. stocks declined by the most in
more than a month, led by Anglo American Plc, the world's
second-biggest mining company.

Experian Group Ltd. led losses among companies that are
dependent on U.S. sales as the pound rose to a 26-year high
against the dollar. Man Group Plc, the world's largest publicly
traded hedge fund manager, and Tate & Lyle Plc, the maker of the
sweetener Splenda, also fell.

U.K. FTSE 100 Benchmark Declines, Paced by BHP; Rolls-Royce, Kelda Slip

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. stocks fell for a second day,
paced by BHP Billiton Ltd. after Deutsche Bank AG downgraded the
shares and metal prices retreated. Anglo American Plc and
Antofagasta Plc also declined.

Rolls-Royce Group Plc, Kelda Group Plc and Schroders Plc
slid as brokerages lowered their recommendations for the
companies' stocks. Reed Elsevier Plc dropped after it agreed to
sell Harcourt Education for $4 billion.

Copper Falls in Asia as Gains on Chile Strikes Seen Overdone; Zinc Lower

(Bloomberg) -- Copper prices fell in Asia amid
speculation that gains on labor unrest at mines in Chile, the
world's largest source of the metal, may have been overdone.

At Dona Ines de Collahuasi, Chile's third-largest copper
mine, owners Xstrata Plc and Anglo American Plc exercised a right
to extend labor talks. The decision by management at the mine in
northern Chile delays the start of a possible strike to July 9
from July 3, union President Hernan Farias said June 29.

U.K.'s FTSE 100 Drops for Sixth Day; Anglo American, Cadbury Lead Decline

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. stocks fell for the sixth day,
the longest consecutive decline since November. Anglo American
Plc and Antofagasta Plc paced the retreat after Cazenove lowered
its recommendation on the mining companies' shares.

Cadbury Schweppes Plc, the world's biggest confectionery
company, dropped to a five-week low.

Hulamin Has $694 Million Market Value on South African Stock Market Debut

(Bloomberg) -- Hulamin Ltd., Africa's largest
aluminum processor, began trading at 32 rand a share in
Johannesburg, giving the company a market value of 6.9 billion
rand ($963.9 million).

Hulamin was spun out of Tongaat-Hulett, Africa's second-
largest sugar producer, as part of Anglo American Plc's plan to
focus on mining. Anglo, the world's second-largest mining
company, owns 38 percent of Hulamin.

European Stocks Drop on Bond Yields; Anglo American, Rio Tinto Decline

(Bloomberg) -- European stocks declined for a fifth
day, the longest rout in three months, after rising bond yields
weighed on equities in the U.S. and Asia.

Anglo American Plc led mining shares lower after copper
slid. BNP Paribas SA paced advancing stocks after Les Echos
reported Societe Generale SA is studying a possible bid for its
larger banking rival.

Anglo, Angloplats boost S.African stocks

(Reuters) - South African stocks pushed higher on Monday as a weaker rand, firmer base metal prices, a broker upgrade and talk of sector consolidation buoyed miners like Anglo Platinum and Anglo American.

The Johannesburg Top-40 index of blue-chip stocks rose 1.2 percent to 25,679.52 points, while the All-share index climbed 1.1 percent to 28,642.40 points.
