Janus shares rise on fund inflows after 6-year gap

(Reuters) - The gains came even as the S&P 500 and Dow Jones industrial average indices were down about 1 percent on worries about tightening credit markets. The S&P Asset Management and Custody Banks index was down 1.6 percent.




Janus reported on Thursday its core funds attracted $1.5 billion in long-term net inflows in the second-quarter, the first quarterly net inflows since 2001. It also posted a 57 percent jump in second-quarter profit, beating analysts' expectations.

US clarifies anti-money laundering enforcement rules

(Reuters) - Banks and credit unions must have proper internal controls,
independent testing of anti-money laundering programs, a
program coordinator and a staff training program. A
cease-and-desist order could be issued if they fail to
establish and maintain a reasonably designed program or correct
a previous problem, regulators said.




The guidance was issued by the Office of the Comptroller of
the Currency, Federal Reserve, Federal Deposit Insurance
Corporation, Office of Thrift Supervision and the National
Credit Union Administration.

Cash machine attacks have S.Africa banks stumped

(Reuters) - Blowing up cash dispensers is becoming a favourite tactic of South African bank robbers, and the country's embattled police as well as its banks are struggling to find a way to prevent it.

Banks report a dramatic rise in this type of crime over the past three years. In the past two weeks alone, five attacks on cash machines have been reported in the coastal city of Durban and police say they have made no arrests.

UPDATE 1-Carlyle forms team to invest in financial firms

(Reuters) - Edward "Ned" Kelly, former chief executive officer of
Mercantile Bankshares Corp., and David Zwiener, former chief
operating officer of The Hartford Financial Services Group
Inc.'s property and casualty operations, have been
named managing directors of the new group.




Kelly and Zwiener will be based in Washington, D.C. and New
York, respectively, and the new Carlyle group will build a team
to pursue investments around the world.

Spanish Banks Demand Realtor Inmobiliaria Colonial Pays More for Loan

(Bloomberg) -- Banks demanded that Inmobiliaria
Colonial SA pay more interest to borrow 7.2 billion euros ($9.7
billion) because of the risk Spain's second-largest developer
will be hurt by a slump in property prices.

Colonial will have to pay more than a 1.25 percentage-point
premium over inter-bank rates because underwriters led by
Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc
can't find enough loan investors, two people involved in the
negotiations said. Chairman Luis Portillo may have to repay part
of the five-year loan after three years, said one of the people.

PNC buying New Jersey bank Yardville

(Reuters) - Pittsburgh-based PNC said the acquisition will help it rank first in deposit share in three wealthy New Jersey counties: Hunterdon, Mercer and Somerset. The purchase comes three months after PNC paid $6 billion for Baltimore's Mercantile Bankshares Corp., becoming the 10th-largest U.S. bank.




Yardville ended March with $2.68 billion of assets, $2.06 billion of deposits and $2 billion of loans. It operates 33 branches in six New Jersey counties and Bucks County, Pennsylvania and has 440 employees. Like many commercial lenders, it has struggled with a tough interest rate environment.

Australian Bank Stocks Gain, Led by ANZ Bank; Toll Drops on Asciano Split

(Bloomberg) -- Australian's S&P/ASX 200 Index was
little changed. Banks including Australia & New Zealand Banking
Group Ltd. rose after the central bank refrained from raising
interest rates.

Toll Holdings Ltd. dropped as shares of its spin-off Asciano
Group trade separately for the first time.

Japanese Shares Rise After Mizuho Forecasts Record Profit; Hitachi Climbs

(Bloomberg) -- Japanese stocks rose for a third day.
Banks led indexes higher after Mizuho Financial Group Inc.
forecast a record profit for this financial year.

Mizuho jumped by the most in almost a year. Sumitomo Mitsui
Financial Group Inc., which forecast on May 21 profits will
climb this year, surged 4.5 percent, adding to a 5.7 percent
gain yesterday.
