MBK Offers to Buy C&M for $3.2 Billion in Korea's Biggest LBO, Bankers Say

(Bloomberg) -- MBK Partners Ltd., the South Korean
private equity group founded by former Carlyle Group executives,
offered 3 trillion won ($3.2 billion) for cable-TV operator C&M,
said two bankers who were asked to provide financing.

The Seoul-based buyout company wants to borrow as much as 2
trillion won to pay for closely held C&M, South Korea's second-
biggest cable-TV operator, said the bankers, who declined to be
identified because the bid hasn't been disclosed. The purchase
would include New York-based Goldman Sachs Group Inc.'s 30.5
percent stake, they said.

Corporate Bond Premiums Soar, Sales Canceled, As Investors Shun Risky Debt

(Bloomberg) -- Japanese corporate bond risk rose to
the highest in more than two years and debt sales faltered
globally as investors shunned all but the safest of debt.

Tyco Electronics Ltd. canceled a bond offering. DAE
Aviation Holdings Inc. scrapped plans for a loan. Credit-default
swaps on Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Bear Stearns Cos. rose to
records on concerns investment banks will be stuck with high-
yield, high-risk debt that they are unable to sell. The rout
spread to indexes gauging the risk of owning everything from
bank loans to emerging market debt.

Goldman Sachs Says Nickel May Decline to $25,000 a Ton as Stockpiles Swell

(Bloomberg) -- Goldman Sachs Group Inc., the
world's largest securities firm by market value, said nickel may
fall to as low as $25,000 a metric ton as inventories continue
to rise ``in the coming weeks.''

Stockpiles of nickel tracked by the London Metal Exchange
soared 76 percent in the past two months to 12,642 tons, the
highest since June 22, 2006, according to exchange data. Nickel
for delivery in three months has lost 35 percent since trading
at a record $51,800 a ton on May 9. It was at $32,450 a ton as
of 9:17 a.m. London time today.

Five Wall Street Firms Target Goldman Sachs With Plan for Trading Platform

(Bloomberg) -- Five of Wall Street's biggest firms
are planning a trading system for unregistered securities,
seeking to compete with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. in a market on
pace for record sales this year, according to people familiar
with the plan.

Citigroup Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Lehman Brothers
Holdings Inc., Merrill Lynch & Co. and Morgan Stanley are
developing a system to handle securities sold under so-called
144a market rules, which allow companies to avoid regulations by
selling bonds and stock to institutional investors, the people
said.

Cytec second-quarter earnings climb

(Reuters) - In the latest quarter, excluding items the company posted
earnings of $56.6 million, or $1.15 a share.




Last month, Goldman Sachs added Cytec to its Americas
investment buy list, saying that the company is poised to
benefit from lower fixed costs and selective pricing
increases.

Goodman Global hires Goldman, mulls options-sources

(Reuters) - "As a matter of practice, we do not comment on any rumors,"
said Goodman spokeswoman Sue Ellen Nutt. Goldman Sachs declined
to comment. Apollo did not respond to a request seeking
comment.




Sources said that private equity firms are pursuing the
company, though the process that Goldman is running is in its
early stages.

Nikkei retreats, Honda, auto stocks down

(Reuters) - But the market received support from Mitsui & Co. Ltd. . Shares of the trading house climbed more than 3 percent after Goldman Sachs raised its target price on the stock to 3,100 yen from 2,170 yen.




Investors were also waiting for the closely watched settlement price, known in Japan as the special quotation or "SQ", which is calculated from the opening prices of the 225 shares on the Nikkei average on the second Friday of the month.

US bank Goldman says threats not thought credible

(Reuters) - Goldman Sachs spokesman Michael DuVally said the bank takes
any threat "very seriously."




"We are working closely with the law enforcement
authorities, who tell us they don't believe the threat to be
very credible," he told Reuters by e-mail. "We have a broad
range of security measures in place to counter all likely
threats and we're monitoring the situation closely."

UPDATE 1-Virgin Media seeks buyer, Carlyle bids -sources

(Reuters) - LONDON, July 1 - British cable operator Virgin
Media has appointed Goldman Sachs to seek a possible
buyer after it received approaches from various private equity
firms, people familiar with the situation said on Sunday.




Carlyle Group [CYL.UL], for one, offered in recent weeks to
buy the company, whose leading shareholder is the flamboyant
entrepreneur Richard Branson, the sources said, but they declined
to disclose the price put forward.

S&P 500 Stalls on Concern Subprime Losses May Worsen; Dow Industrials Rise

(Bloomberg) -- The Standard & Poor's 500 Index
was little changed amid heightened concern that losses from
loans to the riskiest borrowers will mount, while the Dow
Jones Industrial Average gained, capping its biggest
quarterly advance since 2003.

Bear Stearns Cos., Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Lehman
Brothers Holdings Inc. led financial firms to the second-
steepest retreat among 10 industries in the S&P 500. Bear
Stearns this week said it would spend $1.6 billion to bail
out two hedge funds that made bad bets on bonds backed by
subprime mortgages.

Road show planned to raise funds in Chrysler deal: WSJ

(Reuters) - J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., Bear Stearns Cos. , Goldman Sachs Group Inc. , Citigroup Inc. and Morgan Stanley are helping Cerberus raise some $62 billion in debt for the deal, which includes Chrysler's finance arm, WSJ said.




On May 14, DaimlerChrysler AG announced that it was selling Chrysler to Cerberus in a $7.4 billion deal.

Calpine shares up after reorganization plan filed

(Reuters) - Calpine, which filed for bankruptcy in December 2005 weighed down by more than $22 billion in debt and court fights with creditors over how to use its cash, said unsecured creditors may receive nearly all of their allowed claims.




In other main points from the plan, Calpine expects to receive up to $8 billion in exit financing from Goldman Sachs and other banks.

Europe shares fall as Nokia slides, bonds in focus

(Reuters) - European shares fell on Thursday as a rise in government bond yields hit Wall Street overnight while Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia slid after a downgrade from Goldman Sachs.

At 07:15 GMT the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index fell 0.3 percent to 1,615.00 points, after a 1.4 percent slide in the Standard & Poor's 500 index on Wednesday as benchmark U.S. Treasury yields broke back above 5.00 percent.

UPDATE 2-Morgan Stanley profit rises, beats estimates

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, June 20 - Morgan Stanley on
Wednesday said its second-quarter profit rose 40 percent,
trouncing expectations as most of its trading and
investment-banking businesses achieved record results.




The blowout results come a week after Lehman Brothers'
strong earnings fueled optimism that Wall Street would
escape any harm from rising subprime mortgage losses. But
expectations were dampened after Goldman Sachs' and Bear
Stearns' fixed-income trading profits took hits.

Goldman Sachs, Fidelity May Be Forced to Cut Stakes in Indian Exchanges

(Bloomberg) -- Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and
Fidelity International Ltd. may be forced to pare their stakes
in India's biggest commodity exchanges should the government
push through a plan to cap investment.

The Reserve Bank of India may limit ownership in the
commodity bourses to 5 percent for a single investor, mirroring
rules set for stock exchanges, Yashwant Bhave, secretary at the
Department of Consumer Affairs, said in a June 14 interview.
