US STOCKS-Indexes end down sharply on credit fears

(Reuters) - All three indexes dropped more than 2 percent. For the
week, the Dow was down 0.7 percent, the S&P 500 was down 1.8
percent and the Nasdaq was down 2 percent.




Based on the latest available data, the Dow Jones
industrial average fell 284.84 points, or 2.12 percent,
to unofficially end at 13,178.49. The Standard & Poor's 500
Index was down 39.39 points, or 2.68 percent, to finish
unofficially at 1,432.81. The Nasdaq Composite Index
was down 64.73 points, or 2.51 percent, to close unofficially
at 2,511.25.

UPDATE 1-News Corp board OKs deal to buy Dow Jones-source

(Reuters) - The board met on Tuesday to consider its $60-per-share
offer.




The board vote came after at least 38 percent of Dow
Jones's voting shares held by the Bancroft family agreed to
support the deal, the source said. The family controls 64
percent of the Dow Jones voting shares.

US STOCKS-Indexes open up on earnings view

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was up 45.11
points, or 0.34 percent, at 13,403.42. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was up 6.15 points, or 0.42 percent, at
1,480.06. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 23.04
points, or 0.89 percent, at 2,606.32.

News Corp wants more Bancroft support on Dow Jones

(Reuters) - The comment from a News Corp. spokesman pushed Dow Jones shares down as much 8.5 percent. The stock was down 3.1 percent at $52.76 in early afternoon trading, compared to News Corp's bid price of $60 per share.




The Bancroft family, which controls more than 64 percent of Dow Jones's voting shares, is expected to decide by the end of Monday whether to support the Murdoch bid.

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was up 43.09
points, or 0.32 percent, at 13,308.56. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was up 4.69 points, or 0.32 percent, at
1,463.64. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 8.45
points, or 0.33 percent, at 2,570.69.

US STOCKS-Wall St ends sharply lower on credit concerns

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was down 207.53
points, or 1.54 percent, at 13,266.04. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was down 23.67 points, or 1.60 percent, at
1,458.99. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 37.10
points, or 1.43 percent, at 2,562.24.

UPDATE 1-Bancroft branch to vote against Murdoch bid -WSJ

(Reuters) - The newspaper also reported that the Denver branch of the
family, which holds 9.1 percent of Dow Jones's voting stock and
supports the News Corp deal, wants Murdoch to raise his
$60-per-share bid.




The Denver trust has argued that shareholders who own
super-voting Class B shares should get a 10 percent to 20
percent premium.

Janus shares rise on fund inflows after 6-year gap

(Reuters) - The gains came even as the S&P 500 and Dow Jones industrial average indices were down about 1 percent on worries about tightening credit markets. The S&P Asset Management and Custody Banks index was down 1.6 percent.




Janus reported on Thursday its core funds attracted $1.5 billion in long-term net inflows in the second-quarter, the first quarterly net inflows since 2001. It also posted a 57 percent jump in second-quarter profit, beating analysts' expectations.

US STOCKS-Indexes add losses on news home sales data

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was down 115.59
points, or 0.84 percent, at 13,669.48. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was down 17.91 points, or 1.18 percent, at
1,500.18. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 27.26
points, or 1.03 percent, at 2,620.91.

Global Stocks Drop; Investors Shun Risk as Credit Market Turmoil Worsens

(Bloomberg) -- Stocks fell around the world and U.S.
Treasuries rallied on concern higher borrowing costs will slow
takeovers, spur debt defaults and curb earnings, prompting
investors to flee riskier assets.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell to its lowest in a
month, while Europe's Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index dropped 1.8
percent, its biggest retreat since March. Benchmark stock indexes
in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Korea, Poland, Russia and Turkey
fell more than 2 percent.

WRAPUP 5-US stocks mixed amid financing concerns, oil soars

(Reuters) - Shares of aircraft maker Boeing jumped to a record as the
stock led advances on the Dow Jones industrial average, while
Internet retailer Amazon.com shares soared more than 24 percent
to a 7-1/2-year high on Nasdaq.




U.S. stocks erased most of their early gains after news
that Chrysler had postponed a $12 billion auto loan deal.
Chrysler is raising cash to help fund a buyout by Cerberus

Stocks up on Boeing, Amazon.com; housing eyed

(Reuters) - The drop followed news that DaimlerChrysler had postponed a $12 billion auto loan deal.




The Dow Jones industrial average was down 5.52 points, or 0.04 percent, at 13,711.43. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 2.53 points, or 0.17 percent, at 1,508.51. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 3.53 points, or 0.13 percent, at 2,636.33.

Stock futures seen mixed, earnings in focus

(Reuters) - The Indicative Dow Jones industrial average, which tracks the 30 index blue chips as they are traded on the Deutsche Boerse's electronic trading platform, XETRA, and translates the prices into dollars, was 0.19 percent lower.




Earnings reports are due from companies including online retailer Amazon.com Inc. , drugmaker Eli Lilly & Co. and hamburger chain McDonald's Corp. .

UPDATE 4-Bancrofts meet to discuss Murdoch bid for Dow Jones

(Reuters) - BOSTON, July 23 - Members of the Bancroft family,
which controls Dow Jones & Co. Inc. , may decide by the
end of the week whether to accept a $5 billion offer by Rupert
Murdoch's News Corp for the publisher of The Wall
Street Journal.




Family members met in Boston on Monday to hear
presentations by their advisers on the deal, but have not
decided if they will agree to the sale.

U.S. Stocks Retreat After Google, Caterpillar Earnings Miss Estimates

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks stumbled at the end of
a week of second-quarter earnings, pulling down the Standard &
Poor's 500 Index and Dow Jones Industrial Average from records.

Google Inc., owner of the most-popular Internet search
engine, plunged the most since February 2006 after posting
profit below analysts' estimates. Caterpillar Inc. accounted
for almost half of the Dow average's decline after earnings
dropped because of falling demand for truck engines. Citigroup
Inc. pushed financial shares to the steepest drop in the S&P
500 after predicting bad loans will increase.

US STOCKS-Indexes rise on profit reports

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was up 78.12
points, or 0.56 percent, at 13,996.34. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was up 6.83 points, or 0.44 percent, at
1,553.00. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 19.50
points, or 0.72 percent, at 2,718.99.

Dow Jones director Li probed on insider trade -WSJ

(Reuters) - Li is chairman and chief executive officer of Bank of East Asia , a mid-tier Hong Kong lender. He is also a member of Hong Kong's Legislative Council.




Dow Jones's board on Tuesday endorsed a $5 billion buyout offer from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., sending the deal to Dow Jones' controlling Bancroft family for final approval. Dow Jones representatives were not immediately available for comment on Li.

News Corp, Dow Jones reach tentative $5 bln deal-WSJ

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, July 16 - Dow Jones & Co. Inc.
Chief Executive Richard Zannino tentatively agreed on Monday to
a $5 billion takeover bid by News Corp. , though the
company's controlling Bancroft family remains divided on the
deal, the Wall Street Journal reported.




The agreement in principle will be put to the full Dow
Jones board on Tuesday evening, said the newspaper, which is
Dow Jones' flagship publication and the asset most coveted by
News Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch.

Wall St Week Ahead: Robust earnings to keep stocks charged

(Reuters) - Rising energy and food prices coupled with uneven retail
sales are not likely to slow down investors as they test the
market's limits. At the same time, the financial sector is
expected to avoid major losses from the subprime sector.




After a week where the Dow Jones industrial average and
Standard & Poor's 500 index reached record highs on mergers
and acquisitions activity and multibillion-dollar blue-chip
buyback plans, investors will eye profits, inflation data and
the Federal Reserve for signs of further good news.

S&P 500 hits lifetime record, surpasses 2000 high

(Reuters) - The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 5.99 points, or 0.39 percent, at 1,553.69.




The Dow Jones industrial average was up 49.99 points, or 0.36 percent, at 13,911.72. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 1.37 points, or 0.05 percent, at 2,703.10.
