Credit worries return, driving Wall St. lower

(Reuters) - Stocks had risen Monday and the first half of Tuesday's session, but the relief rally was cut short when American Home Mortgage Investment Corp. said it may have to liquidate assets. Shares of the mortgage lender fell 90 percent.




Investors remain sensitive to news about worsening lending conditions, which pummeled global equity markets last week. Credit market concerns pushed the S&P down 3.2 percent in July, its worst performance in three years.

Nordstrom, RadioShack, Rural Cellular, ValueClick: U.S. Equity Movers

(Bloomberg) -- The following is a list of companies

Home Depot Inc. (HD US) rose the most since June 20, gaining
61 cents, or 1.7 percent, to $37.36. Shares of the world's
largest home-improvement retailer could double in the next three
years, Barron's said, citing no one.

(Bloomberg) -- The following is a list of companies
whose shares may have unusual price changes in U.S. exchanges
tomorrow. This preview includes news that broke after exchanges
closed. Stock symbols are in parentheses after company names.

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN US): Shares of the world's biggest
online retailer are too expensive after this past week's
increase, and expansion plans threaten its profit margins,
Barron's said, citing no one. Amazon stock rose 3 cents to
$84.04 on July 27.

Stocks gain on profits, energy; Apple up late

(Reuters) - Boeing shares jumped to a record high and led advancers on the Dow, while Internet retailer Amazon.com Inc. paced the Nasdaq with a 24-percent rise after tripling its profit.




U.S. oil prices jumped to $75.88 a barrel after government data showed that crude stocks fell last week. Shares of energy companies followed, with Exxon Mobil Corp. rising 2.2 percent on the day to $92.79.

WRAPUP 5-US stocks mixed amid financing concerns, oil soars

(Reuters) - Shares of aircraft maker Boeing jumped to a record as the
stock led advances on the Dow Jones industrial average, while
Internet retailer Amazon.com shares soared more than 24 percent
to a 7-1/2-year high on Nasdaq.




U.S. stocks erased most of their early gains after news
that Chrysler had postponed a $12 billion auto loan deal.
Chrysler is raising cash to help fund a buyout by Cerberus

Wall Street Analysts Failed to Foresee 28% Rally in Shares of Amazon.com

(Bloomberg) -- Amazon.com Inc.'s second-quarter
profit surprised Wall Street analysts, prompting at least six to
raise their rating on shares of the biggest online retailer.

Shares of Amazon, which climbed as much as 28 percent today,
have more than doubled over the past year. Just eight of the 25
analysts who cover Amazon recommend that investors buy the stock,
according to Bloomberg data.

Honda, Riding `Buzz' From New Accord, May Win Investors as Toyota Stalls

(Bloomberg) -- Shares of Toyota Motor Corp.
outperformed those of Honda Motor Co. in the first half of the
year on rising U.S. sales. Now it may be Honda's turn.

Japan's second-largest carmaker will reap bigger gains than
Toyota from a weaker-than-forecast yen and higher demand for
more fuel-efficient vehicles in the U.S., said Jeffrey Scharf,
president of Scharf Investments, a $660 million fund in Santa
Cruz, California. Honda also predicts sales will rise with the
September release of a new Accord sedan, its top-selling model.

UPDATE 5-Countrywide profit down 33 pct, slashes outlook

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, July 24 - Countrywide Financial Corp , the largest U.S. mortgage lender, on Tuesday reported a 33 percent decline in second-quarter profit and slashed its full-year earnings forecast, citing a difficult housing market.



Shares of Countrywide fell 8.7 percent in pre-market electronic trading.

Countrywide profit down 33 pct

(Reuters) - Shares of Countrywide fell as much as 8.7 percent to their lowest level since November 2005.




Second-quarter net income for the Calabasas, California-based company fell to $485.1 million, or 81 cents per share, from $722.2 million, or $1.15, a year earlier. Revenue fell 15 percent to $2.55 billion.

Mexican stocks rise, driven by America Movil gains

(Reuters) - The benchmark IPC stock index moved up 0.52 percent
to 32,089 points, while the peso firmed 0.144
percent to 10.7635 per dollar.




Shares of America Movil , Mexico's dominant
cell-phone operator and the most heavily weighted company on
the IPC index, advanced 0.70 percent to 34.50 pesos, while its
New York-traded shares gained 1.26 percent to $64.17.

Google profit disappoints on expenses, shares drop

(Reuters) - SAN FRANCISCO, July 19 - Web search leader Google Inc. reported on Thursday a 28 percent rise in profits that fell short of consensus expectations, as a recent jump in operating expenses offset market share gains against rivals.



Shares tumbled 5.5 percent in extended trade after Google said net income rose to $925 million, or $2.93 a diluted share, compared with the year-ago quarter's $721.1 million, or $2.33 per share. Excluding one-time items and stock option expenses, Google posted a profit of $1.12 billion or $3.56 per share, which was 3 cents per share short of Wall Street targets.

UPDATE 1-Paragon Shipping files for $201.3 mln IPO

(Reuters) - UBS Securities LLC, Morgan Stanley & Co. Inc. and Cantor
Fitzgerald & Co. were underwriting the IPO, the drybulk
shipping services provider told the U.S Securities and Exchange
Commission.




The company, which intends to apply for listing Class A
Common Shares on the Nasdaq under the symbol "PRGN," said it
plans to use part of its net proceeds to fund a portion of the
purchase price of three additional drybulk carriers and to
repay up to $108.3 million of debt under its existing credit
facility.

Nedbank shares surge on StanChart talks report

(Reuters) - Shares in South Africa's fourth-biggest bank, Nedbank Group Ltd, jumped six percent on Thursday after a report that Standard Chartered was in talks to acquire the group.

Nedbank shares rose as much as 6.25 percent to 144.50 rand, adding 3.9 billion rand to its market value, after Business Day quoted unnamed sources as saying the South African bank had been in talks with Standard Chartered for some time.

Shares of Roche Holding AG will probably advance after the

UPDATE 1-AMB Property second-quarter FFO down, shares fall

(Reuters) - Shares of the company fell more than 13 percent to $47.80
in late electronic trade, after closing at $55.33 Tuesday on
the New York Stock Exchange.




The San Francisco-based company reported second-quarter
funds from operations of $78.5 million, or 74 cents a
share, down from $82.4 million, or 87 cents per share, reported
in the year-ago period.

Switzerland's SMI Index Rises; Swiss Re and Zurich Financial Lead Climb

(Bloomberg) -- Swiss stocks rose for a third day, led
by Swiss Reinsurance Co., the world's biggest reinsurer, and Zurich
Financial Services AG, Switzerland's largest insurer. Shares of
Julius Baer Holding AG also climbed.

The Swiss Market Index of the 24 largest and most actively
traded companies advanced 38.06, or 0.4 percent, to 9299.80 in
Zurich. The broader Swiss Performance Index gained 27.43, or 0.4
percent, to 7601.81.

Spartech says CEO quits, cuts profit view; shares fall

(Reuters) - "Abd, CEO since May 2005, was the architect and driving force behind the company's recent structural changes and operational improvements," Deutsche Bank analyst David Begleiter said in a research note to clients on Monday.




Shares of the company fell more than 20 percent, or $5.52, to $21.80 in midday trade, making them the highest percentage loser on the New York Stock Exchange on more than four times the 10-day moving average volume, according to Reuters data.

PreMD shares soar on AstraZeneca deal

(Reuters) - TORONTO, July 16 - Shares of PreMD jumped more than 50 percent on Monday after the small Canadian biotechnology company signed a U.S. marketing deal with AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP for its skin cholesterol test.



PreMD shares were up 60 Canadian cents, or 52.2 percent, at C$1.75 at midmorning on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Idenix writes off hepatitis drug after FDA review

(Reuters) - Shares of the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotechnology company plunged 24 percent in pre-market trading after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration placed further development of the drug in the United States on hold.




While Idenix said it will discuss the issue with its partner, Swiss drugmaker Novartis AG , the company said it does not believe the drug can be rescued.
