Caterpillar, Eli Lilly, Google, Limelight, Microsoft: U.S. Equity Preview

(Bloomberg) -- The following is a list of companies
whose shares may have unusual price changes in U.S. exchanges
today. This preview includes news that broke after exchanges
closed yesterday. Stock symbols are in parentheses after company
names. Share prices are as of 9 a.m. in New York.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD US) rose 47 cents, or 3
percent, to $16.25 in trading before U.S. exchanges opened. The
second-largest maker of personal-computer processors said sales
in the second quarter increased 13 percent to $1.38 billion after
cutting prices to compete with Intel Corp. Analysts had estimated
the company to have sales of $1.25 billion, according to a
Bloomberg survey.

UPDATE 3-AMD loses money but sales up, boosting shrs

(Reuters) - SAN FRANCISCO, July 19 - Advanced Micro Devices
Inc. posted a 13 percent rise in quarterly revenue on
Thursday, a surprise sign of recent success against rival Intel
Corp. that sparked a rally in the microchip maker's
shares despite its $600 million loss.




The third quarterly loss in a row reflected a grueling
price war with AMD's bigger rival, but the second-biggest maker
of computer microprocessors said gross profit margins had risen
from three months earlier and were still improving.

AMD posts Q2 loss

(Reuters) - AMD, which has lost money for three quarters in a row amid
a price war with rival Intel Corp. , also said it had
stopped its market share losses and improved profit margins.




"It's still a company that's very troubled, but the
starting point is much better than what people have
recognized," said American Technology Research analyst Doug
Freedman.

Avocent, Delphi, Humana, IndyMac Bancorp, Warner: U.S. Equity Movers

(Bloomberg) -- The following is a list of companies
whose shares are having unusual price changes in U.S. exchanges
today. Stock symbols are in parentheses after company names.
Share prices are as of 1:10 p.m. New York time.

Brazilian airline American depositary receipts fell after a
passenger plane owned by Tam SA crashed on landing at Sao Paulo's
domestic airport, killing as many as 200 people in the country's
worst air disaster. Tam's ADRs (TAM US), each worth one share,
fell $2.99, or 8.3 percent, to $32.84. Gol Linhas Aereas
Inteligentes SA's ADRs (GOL US), each worth one share, fell
$1.27, or 4.2 percent, to $29.14.

U.S. Stock-Index Futures Fall; Bear Stearns, Intel, Pfizer Slide in Europe

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stock-index futures declined
after Bear Stearns Cos. told investors there's little value left
in its two failed hedge funds and Intel Corp. and Yahoo! Inc.
said competition is reducing earnings.

Bear Stearns, the second-biggest underwriter of mortgage-
backed securities, retreated in Europe. Intel, the world's
largest computer-chip maker, and Yahoo, the most-visited U.S. Web
site, also fell. Pfizer Inc. shares slipped after the company
reported earnings that missed analysts' estimates.

Intel quarterly profit rises but margins miss

(Reuters) - For its second quarter, Intel posted net earnings of $1.3 billion, or 22 cents per share, compared with $885 million, or 15 cents per share, a year earlier.




Excluding a special gain of 3 cents per share related to a tax item, Intel's profit was 19 cents per share, in line with the average Wall Street expectation.

Intel backs project to give laptops to poor kids

(Reuters) - Intel Corp. said on Friday it will support a Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher's project to put computers in the hands of poor children around the world, reversing its long-standing opposition to the proposal.

The world's biggest chipmaker will join the board of the One Laptop Per Child Foundation, which developed the XO laptop -- a personal computer that it plans to put into production in September at a cost of $176.

Intel May Post Sales at High-End of Forecast, Analysts Say; Shares Climb

(Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp. shares climbed for a fifth
day after analysts at UBS AG and JPMorgan said the world's
biggest chipmaker may report second-quarter sales at the high-end
of the company's own forecast.

Intel may post revenue of $8.6 billion in the period ended
June, above the midpoint of the company's April forecast of $8.2
billion to $8.8 billion, according to UBS. Analysts led by Uche
Orji raised their 12-month share-price forecast by $3 to $30,
saying the stock will also get a boost as Intel expands its gross
margin, the percentage of sales left after production costs.

U.S. Stocks Advance After Fed Says Economy to Keep Growing; Monsanto Gains

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks gained for a second day
after the Federal Reserve said the economy will probably keep
growing and analysts upgraded Intel Corp. and Cisco Systems
Inc.

Monsanto Co., the world's biggest seed producer, rose
after earnings beat analyst estimates. General Motors Corp.,
the largest U.S. automaker, climbed after selling a unit that
makes transmissions.

US STOCKS-Blue chips slip at open on inflation data

(Reuters) - The Nasdaq was higher. Chip maker Intel Corp.
received a brokerage upgrade.




The Dow Jones industrial average was down 19.03
points, or 0.14 percent, at 13,408.70. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was down 0.99 points, or 0.07 percent, at
1,505.35. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 0.09 points
at 2,605.44.

US blue chips slip at open on inflation data

(Reuters) - U.S. blue-chip stocks opened down slightly on Thursday after government data showed first-quarter core personal consumption spending, an inflation gauge favored by the Federal Reserve, was revised higher.

The Nasdaq was higher. Chip maker Intel Corp. received a brokerage upgrade.

(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. stock market posted its
first advance in four days after a rally in oil prices improved
earnings prospects for fuel producers and better-than-expected
profit at Oracle Corp. ignited shares of software makers.

Exxon Mobil Corp., Intel Corp. and Microsoft Corp. helped
carry the Standard & Poor's 500 Index to its biggest gain in
two weeks. Oracle, the world's third-largest software maker,
jumped the most in three months after saying sales may rise 21
percent.

Comcast backs start-up to ramp up Web speeds

(Reuters) - Comcast Interactive Capital said it will join U.S. No. 6 cable operator Advance/Newhouse in a $17 million second-round of funding for BroadLogic Network Technologies. Comcast did not say how much it was investing.




BroadLogic already counts Time Warner Inc., Cisco Systems Inc. and Intel Corp. among its earlier corporate investors.

Intel Informs Customers It Will Slash Chip Prices by 50 Percent Next Month

(Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp., the world's largest
chipmaker, plans to slash the price of some processors over the
next three months to regain market share from Advanced Micro
Devices Inc.

The company will cut prices of its Core 2 Quad processor by
50 percent on July 22, according to an Intel document given to
clients. The chips, introduced in November to run servers and the
most expensive personal computers, sell for $530 each, according
to Santa Clara, California-based Intel's Web site.

Intel, Asustek announce plans for low-cost laptop

(Reuters) - Intel, the world's largest chipmaker, has distributed laptops to children in developing countries for years, but has yet to put them into the kind of mass production planned by another group, the One Laptop Per Child Foundation.




Intel and Asustek's low-cost PC would be a fully-fledged, low-end notebook, while the OLPCs are green-and-white plastic, kid-friendly laptops that can be powered with hand cranks when electricity is not available. They cost about $180 each.

Intel, STMicro to create memory chip venture

(Reuters) - In exchange, Intel will get a 45.1 percent stake and a $432 million cash payment at close. STMicroelectronics will receive a 48.6 percent stake and a $468 million cash payment at close.




Francisco Partners L.P. plans to invest $150 million cash for convertible preferred stock representing a 6.3 percent stake in venture, subject to change in certain circumstances.
